Trek to the sacred summit of Hagen Mountain, rising from
grassy lowlands, to the forest covered peak at almost
4,000 metres above sea level. This area abounds with tree
kangaroos and many species of birds and orchids, some of
which are yet to be classified. Staying overnight in a unique
Cave Hotel is a highlight of this Highlands Trek.
Travel from the Highlands to Tufi, PNG’s fjord land, flying
over the magnificent Owen Stanley Ranges and realise how
diverse this astounding country really is.
Lae, on the northern coast of Papua New Guinea is the major
shipping port for Highlands produce and the gathering place
for many different tribal groups. The impressive Rainforest
Habitat and Botanical Gardens of Lae should be included on
a visit to this area. The Markham Valley is spectacular, with
waving sugar cane stands and mountains that seem to rise
vertically out of the valley floor.
Just over three hours drive from Lae brings you to the historic
town of Bulolo, the scene of one of Papua New Guinea’s early
major gold finds. Most of the gold recovered from the area
was alluvial and huge dredges were flown in by Junkers cargo
planes to tap this source of wealth. The amount of machinery
flown into the area established aviation history in PNG, as for
a long time it was a world record for weight of cargo moved by
aircraft. Now it is a sleepy mountain hideaway, better known
for the Ecology Institute in nearby Wau and the strange
smoked bodies that can be seen at Aseki. Wau itself boasts a
wide range of historical, military, adventure and cultural sites
and experiences.
