From November to April, New Ireland, located a few
degrees south of the equator provides world class waves
with uninterrupted North Pacific Ocean swells. Surfers can
choose from a range of accommodation options, including
North Coast Mainland, Live Aboard Catamaran, or Island
Retreats.
In an effort to promote sustainable development, Niu Ailan
Surfriders Alliance (previously Kavieng Surf Club) manage
and oversee the Area Surf Management Plan, a surf quota
system which limits the daily number of visiting surfers to
ensure uncrowded conditions. Surf Management Plans cover
Kavieng, the East Coast of mainland New Ireland and the
North Lavongai area.
Kavieng is known for having access to a good range of quality
left and right breaks in relatively close vicinity. All breaks are
reef, and vary in degree of difficulty, depending on the size
and direction of the swell and the depth of the reef, with
consistent swells between 3 to 5 foot, reaching to 8 foot and
more. All breaks can be surfed on most tides and the set ups
vary depending on conditions.
The coasts of Lavongai, New Hanover and the outer islands
have reliable waves, with many breaks still to be discovered.
The remote Central Northeastern coast of New Ireland also
has good consistent breaks, with numerous areas still to be
discovered.
Many of New Ireland’s best breaks are in uncharted waters,
making this a true surfing frontier. |
