KAVIENG
Kavieng, at the very tip of New Ireland is a fascinating tropical
town that services the many islands of this beautiful province.
White sand beaches and small dots of offshore islands typify
this area of PNG. The German built Boluminski Highway runs
almost the full length of the main island. The gentle sandy
beaches on one coast are a contrast to the steep sided
bays and inlets of the other.
The unique Malagan culture of this area produces highly
decorated masks that have been collectors items since
Kavieng first made contact with Western cultures. New
Ireland was occupied by the Japanese during WWII and many
obvious signs of this occupation can still be seen, including
large coastal guns, wrecked aircraft and bunkers.
Beneath the waters of Kavieng Harbour lie ships and a
submarine sunk as a result of allied bombing attacks. With
schools of pelagic fish, excellent visibility and wrecks, Kavieng
is a must for dive enthusiasts. |
