Mount Hagen and the Tari Valley Mount Hagen situated at 5,000 feet, high in the magnificent
Whagi Valley is the Provincial Centre of Western Highlands
Province. Early explorers searching for gold discovered a
vast number of people who believed that the valley walls
represented the known boundaries of Earth and that white
people were spirits of long departed tribal members. Mount
Hagen is now a vibrant commercial centre, linked to the Coast
and Southern Highlands by the Highlands Highway.
The remote Tari Valley is a pristine environment rich in flora
and fauna and home to what must be the most colourful
display of male decoration to be found anywhere. The Huli
male spends up to 18 months in a bachelor’s village cultivating
his human hair wig, the growth of which is guaranteed by the
use of magic water. The wigs are decorated with everlasting
daisies, birds of paradise plumes, mountain flowers and
lichen from the forest. Faces are then painted in bright red,
yellow and white pigment to perform at sing sings. Villages
and family group compounds are fortified by solid mud walls,
topped with sharpened stakes, with interconnecting trenches
delineating clan boundaries.
