GOROKA Goroka, the provincial centre of Eastern Highlands Province,
is known as the coffee capital of PNG, with cool nights
and warm, clear days. Attractions include the excellent JK
McCarthy Cultural and Historical Museum and Gahavasuka
National Park for the Princess Stephanie Bird of Paradise
and superb flora. Not to be missed are the excellent artifact
bargains, in particular hand woven baskets and trays that can
be purchased from street vendors or the local market.
If your
visit coincides with a performance, Raun Rau Theatre is a must
see. The fascinating local material construction, interpreted
with modern architectural styles and a performance that is
usually a modern example of a village story should not be
missed.
