Mount Hagen and the Tari Valley
Mount Hagen high in the magnificent Whagi Valley is the provincial centre of the western highlands. Early explorers searching for gold discovered a people who believed the valley walls were the known boundaries of the Earth, and that white people were spirits of the long departed tribal members.
Today this area, along with the Tari Valley is open to explorers of a different kind. Here you’ll discover the majesty of the male decoration.
The Huli male spends up to 18 months in a bachelor’s village cultivating his human hair wig, the growth of which is guaranteed by the use of ’magic water’. The wigs are then decorated with flowers and feathers; their faces are painted bright yellow, white and red and perform at sing sings. It is something you should not miss.
