BIRDING HOLIDAYS
Papua New Guinea has a wonderful diversity of bird life, with
over 646 recorded species, 86 species of which are endemic
to PNG. 25 endemic species occur on the mainland and it is
possible to see up to 14 species of Kingfisher and 23 Bird of
paradise varieties alone, including the 3 most spectacular
endemics, being the Ribbon-tailed Astrapia and the Raggiana
and Blue Birds-of-paradise.
Kiunga is access point to the third largest expanse of lowland
tropical forest on earth and supports the Southern Crowned
Pigeon, Little Paradise-Kingfisher, Flame Bowerbird, Whitebellied
Pitohui and Greater Bird-of-paradise.
The Tari Valley
has recorded over 15 Birds-of-paradise and is a highlight
of any birding trip to PNG. Varirata National Park and the
Port Moresby area also provide rich birding areas, well worth
visiting.
The Islands Region also supports many species. New Ireland
has Bismarck Boobok, Paradise Drongo and the chance of
a yet to be described species of Microeca Flycatcher. In
New Britain search for Island Monarch, Nicobar Pigeon and
Bronzewing New Britain Grey-headed Goshawk. Manus
Island has Superb Pitta, Meek’s Pigmy-Parrot, Admiralty
Pied Monarch, with Manus Rufous Fantail and Mackinlay’s
Cuckoo-Dove possibilities on remote Tong Island.
Shown are two sample itineraries, including airfares, transfers,
tours, accommodation, meals and services of a local guide in
each area. Many of our birding tours are designed to individual
client or special interest group requirements and we ask that
you contact us for details on personalized itineraries and full
species lists. |
